Meet the Kokedama

Kokedama plants need care for both the plant and the moss ball around the roots. The moss helps hold the shape and moisture, so the goal is to keep it slightly damp without leaving it soggy for too long.

☀️ Light

Kokedama plants prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun because it can scorch the leaves and dry out or damage the moss ball.

💧 Water

Submerge only the moss ball in water for 1 to 2 minutes, or until bubbling slows. Gently squeeze out extra water, then let it drain for about 30 minutes before hanging or displaying again.

🌿 Humidity

Kokedama plants thrive in higher humidity. If your home is dry, mist the moss every 4 to 5 days or place it near a humidity tray to help keep the moss slightly damp.

🌡️ Temperature

Keep Kokedama in a room around 60 to 75°F. Avoid cold drafts, heaters, vents, and sudden temperature changes because they can stress both the plant and the moss.

🐾 Pet Safety

Pet safety depends on the plant inside the Kokedama. Check the specific plant variety before placing it near cats, dogs, or curious pets.

⭐ Difficulty

Medium. Kokedama is not hard, but it needs more attention than a normal potted plant because the moss ball must stay slightly moist without becoming soggy.

RootGrowings tip: Learn the weight of your Kokedama right after watering and again when it feels dry. If the moss ball feels very light, it is usually time to water.

Common Problems Q&A

Why is my Kokedama wilting or looking unhealthy?

Wilting usually means the moss ball is too dry or the plant is stressed by poor light. Check the moss by gently squeezing it. If it feels dry, soak the moss ball and then let it drain well.

How do I care for Kokedama in winter?

In winter, it usually needs less frequent watering because it dries more slowly. Keep it in bright indirect light, away from cold drafts and heaters, and mist lightly if indoor air becomes very dry.

How do I repot or refresh a Kokedama?

When the plant outgrows the moss ball, gently remove the moss, loosen the roots, trim only if needed, then reshape the soil and moss around the root ball. Rewrap it firmly with string so it holds together.
