Meet the Croton

Croton plants are known for their bright patterned leaves and tropical look. They need enough light to keep their colors vivid, and they prefer moist, well-draining soil without sitting in water.

☀️ Light

Croton needs bright light and can benefit from 6 to 8 hours of strong light daily. An east or west-facing window is a good spot. If it does not get enough light, the colorful leaves may turn more green.

💧 Water

Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season, but never soggy. Water when the top of the soil begins to feel dry, and reduce watering in winter when growth slows.

🌿 Humidity

Croton thrives in high humidity, ideally around 60 to 80%. If your home is dry, mist around the plant, use a humidifier, or place it near other plants.

🌡️ Temperature

Keep Croton warm and away from drafts. It does not tolerate temperatures below 60°F, and cold exposure can cause leaf drop and stress.

🐾 Pet Safety

Croton is not pet safe. Keep it away from cats, dogs, and curious pets.

⭐ Difficulty

Medium. It is manageable indoors, but it needs strong light, humidity, warmth, and consistent watering to keep its color.

RootGrowings tip: Croton does not like sudden changes. If you move it to a new spot, give it time to adjust and avoid cold drafts while it settles.

Common Problems Q&A

Why are my Croton leaves wilting and dropping?

Leaf drop is often caused by stress from moving, repotting, drafts, or sudden changes. Keep the plant warm, give it bright light, and keep care consistent while it adjusts.

Why are my Croton leaves limp and drooping?

Limp leaves usually mean the soil has dried too much. Crotons like consistently moist soil, so water well when the top begins to feel dry and let extra water drain out.

Why are there brown spots on my Croton leaves?

Brown spots can come from disease, leaf damage, or stress. Remove infected or badly damaged foliage, avoid wet leaves touching other plants, and improve airflow around the plant.
