Alocasia Care Guide
Alocasia, often known as African Mask or Elephant Ear, is a striking tropical houseplant loved for its dramatic, sculptural leaves. It brings a bold exotic look indoors, but it does need consistent care, humidity, and warmth to stay happy.
Meet the Alocasia
Alocasia plants are known for their unusual, alien-like foliage and strong tropical character. They prefer bright indirect light, moist but well-drained soil, high humidity, and a stable warm room. They are beautiful statement plants, but they are a little more sensitive than beginner plants.
☀️ Light
Alocasia grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight because it can scorch the leaves, but too little light can lead to slower growth and smaller leaves.
💧 Water
Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and make sure the pot has drainage to prevent root rot. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
🌿 Humidity
Alocasia needs high humidity, ideally around 60% or higher. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or mist around the plant to help keep the leaves from drying at the edges.
🌡️ Temperature
Keep it in warm indoor temperatures around 65 to 80°F. Avoid cold drafts, chilly windows, air conditioners, heaters, and sudden temperature changes.
🐾 Pet Safety
Alocasia is not pet safe. Keep it away from cats, dogs, and curious pets.
⭐ Difficulty
Medium. It is beautiful indoors, but it needs steady moisture, high humidity, bright indirect light, and warm stable conditions.
RootGrowings tip: Alocasia can droop fast when it gets too dry or too cold. Keep the soil lightly moist, raise humidity, and avoid placing it near drafts or vents.
Common Problems Q&A
Why are my Alocasia leaves drooping?
Drooping is often caused by underwatering, low humidity, or cold stress. Check the soil first. If the top inch is dry, water thoroughly, then raise humidity and keep the plant warm.
Why are my Alocasia leaves yellowing?
Yellow leaves can come from overwatering, poor drainage, or not enough light. Keep the soil damp but never soggy, and place the plant in bright indirect light.
Why are there spots on my Alocasia leaves?
Leaf spots can be a sign of pests, disease, poor airflow, or overwatering. Improve airflow, avoid soggy soil, check the leaves closely, and treat pests early if you see them.
