Air Plant Care Guide

Air Plants, also known as Tillandsia, are unique plants that do not need soil to grow. They absorb water and nutrients through their leaves, making them perfect for terrariums, hanging displays, shelves, and creative plant styling.

Air Plant care guide

Meet the Air Plant

Air Plants are easy to grow, but they need the right balance of light, watering, airflow, humidity, and warmth. Since they do not grow in soil, drying properly after watering is one of the most important parts of keeping them healthy.

☀️ Light

Air Plants like bright light and can sit near a window with some direct sunlight. Avoid too much harsh direct sun because it can dry or burn the plant. Artificial light can also work if natural light is limited.

💧 Water

Water weekly by soaking the Air Plant upside down in a bowl of water for up to an hour, then shake off extra water and let it dry completely. In hot or dry rooms, mist 1 to 3 times per week between soaks.

🌿 Airflow & Humidity

Air Plants need good air circulation and should not stay constantly wet. After watering, they should dry within 4 hours or less. Avoid fully enclosed terrariums with poor airflow.

🌡️ Temperature

Keep Air Plants in warm conditions around 50 to 90°F. Keep them away from heaters, air conditioners, and dry airflow that can dehydrate the leaves.

🐾 Pet Safety

Air Plants are considered pet safe, making them a good decorative option for homes with cats or dogs.

⭐ Difficulty

Easy. They are simple to care for when they get bright light, weekly watering, and enough airflow to dry after each soak.

RootGrowings tip: Never leave water sitting in the center or base of an Air Plant. After soaking, shake it gently and place it upside down on a towel until fully dry.

Common Problems Q&A

Why is the base of my Air Plant brown and mushy?

This is usually a sign of rot from too much water sitting in the plant. Air Plants absorb water through their leaves, but they must dry fully after watering.

Why are my Air Plant leaves curling and browning?

Curling and browning usually means the plant is too dry. Soak it weekly, mist more often in hot dry rooms, and keep it away from heaters or dry air.

How often should I use Air Plant fertilizer spray?

Use fertilizer spray about once a month, usually at the same time you water. Avoid over-fertilizing because too much can burn the plant.
